The Madness Is Here!
March Madness that is! This is a perfect time for get-togethers, spring is around the corner, the weather is warming up and so is the Basketball. Nothing goes together better than spring fever weather, basketball and hot wings. Colorado has two teams competing in the Madness in 2012. University of Colorado and Colorado State. March Madness is a phenomenon that grips the national sports world from the second week of March through the first week of April. March Madness is the name that is given to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments. These tournaments determine the national champions of college basketball.
The NCAA tournaments are an American tradition that sends millions of fans into a synchronized frenzy each year. It’s the last-second, buzzer-beating baskets, the euphoria of winning to play another day and the agony of losing and going home.
Held mostly in March, it is known informally as March Madness or the Big Dance, and has become one of the most prominent annual sporting events in theUnited States.
The tournament teams include champions from 31 Division I conferences (which receive automatic bids), and 37 teams which are awarded berths. These teams are chosen by an NCAA selection committee. The 68 teams are divided into four regions and organized into a single elimination bracket, which predetermines when a team wins a game, which team it will face next. Each team is seeded or ranked, within its region. After an initial four games between eight lower-seeded teams, the tournament takes place over the course of three weekends at neutral sites around the United States. Lower-seeded teams are placed in the bracket against higher seeded teams. Each weekend cuts three-fourths of teams out, to a “Sweet Sixteen”, to a “Final Four”; the Final four is usually played on the first weekend in April. These four teams, one from each region, battle it out in one destination for the national championship.
